9 month review.
After almost a year we take a look at this hard working, strong auto opening knife from Benchmade.

We were given the chance to review the Benchmade 5000 Automatic folding knife. The 5000 Auto Presidio features a 6061 Aircraft Aluminum handle with a Patented Bi-Directional Grip Pattern which provides a Superior Grip. The handle is made with Non-Reflective Components for Tactical Applications. The Auto AXIS lock allows the knife to be used with either hand quickly. The blade is a drop point design with partial serration at 3.42 inches long and .13 inches thick and is made from 154CM stainless steel. The Benchmade 5000 Auto Presidio with its aluminum handles is a hefty 5.62 ounces and feels good in the hand with or without a glove. Another well made, and sturdy knife from one of the most popular knife makers in the USA. The 5000 Presidio was designed by Mel Pardue, the senior team member / designer for Benchmade.

The Auto AXIS lock and automatic opening with a touch of the AXIS lock is military and Law Enforcement only, but a non automatic model, the 520 Presidio, is also available with the same strong materials and workmanship

Microtech Daytona OTF (out the front) automatic knife. The set also features matching serial numbers on knife and pistol. The Microtech Daytona 3.1 inch drop point blade is made from S30V. The Microtech Daytona is 7.5 inches overall, and weighs 3 ounces. The Microtech Daytona has Titanium hardware, pocket clip and polished carbon fiber inserts it retails for just under $400. The Microtech Archangel and Microtech Daytona combo retails for around $1000 or the Microtech Archangel retails for just under $600 without the knife.

Surefire Delta EW-04 Folding Knife is 4.7 inches long when closed and 8 inches open. The Surefire Delta Folding Knife has a 3.37 inch blade Length and weighs 4.6 ounces. The blade is made with Crucible CPM S30V steel. The Surefire Delta EW-04 Folding Knife has 1/8-inch thick titanium frame halves and liner lock. Tools on the Surefire Delta Folding Knife include: screwdriver, wire cutter/crimper (accepts up to 12-guage wire), parachute cord/seatbelt cutter, wrench (fits hex nuts from 1/2-inch down to 13/64-inch), and self-seating wrench slot for smaller nuts, and reversible pocket clip.

Benchmade AXIS Locking Mechanism

The Benchmade 940 is an Aluminum and Titanium handle and body, with a Modified Reverse Tanto blade. The easy opening and closing AXIS lock makes this an easy knife to use with one hand (either left or right handed). Aluminum Handle Scales are lightweight and durable and provide a good foundation to attach the belt clip. In the 9 years this knife has been carried the belt clip has only needed to be tightened occasionally. Now after 9 years of daily carry use, the clip on this Benchmade 940 has finally broken. I took a close look at the new Glock model 78 field knife. It is a lot different than my first one (green in the photos). The first Glock knife is from the late 1980s the black Glock knife is new 2008 (approx) manufacture. From a few feet away they look the same but up close side by side there are many differences. the Glock field knife sheaths are also quite different. The Glock Knife blade is made of phosphate-treated Spring steel HRC55. The newer version of the Glock Field Knife weighs 7.27 ounces. The Glock Model 78 (no saw on blade) has a 6-1/2 inch blade and is 11-1/2 inches overall

What is not so obvious in the photos are the differences in polymer these are made from. The older Glock Field Knife is a smoother green material, the newer 2008 version is a softer material that seems to grip the skin and does not feel as slippery as the older material.

We plan to do a long term review of the Top Knives Survival Saw, here are the initial photos as we received it from EDC Depot.com The Survival Saw has an overall length of 7 inches. The survival saw has a 4 inch Powder Coated Red Blade. The handle material is Kydex. These Tops Knives survival saws have a Hardened Steel Reciprocating Saw Blade that can cut: Bone, Frozen Meat, Wood, PVC, Copper, Aluminum and Hard Rubber

We had a chance to test out the SaberCut survival saw from Ultimate Survival Technologies. For fire wood or shelter material, cutting large limbs and trees are no match for this chainsaw type blade. This is a sturdy and well made tool built from quality materials. It will last a long time, is capable of being re-sharpened. The blade is made to cut in both directions and clean its own cut as the blade moves.

Victorinox Huntsman - Boy Scouts of America (B.S.A.) model

I bought this small pocket tool at the local Ace Hardware store. I had been looking for the Swiss made one, but have not found them anywhere in town. So when I saw this one for $16 I bought it right away. It is well made, and the locks are great. The locks hold well and need to be deliberately disengaged. I have used it for a few jobs over the past few weeks and it seems to be holding up well. It is becoming loose, so I would not use it on a keyring. But it really is large to be carried every day. This would go well in a bag. Clipped on a ring in the bag so that the tool is always available but not lost at the bottom of a pocket. It is not heavy, but it is solid steel so it is not light either. This tool is sold as 10 Tools-in-1 with a 1) Knife, 2) Small Phillips screwdriver, 3) Small Flathead screwdriver, 4) Large Flathead screwdriver, 5) Bottle opener, 6) File, 7) Tweezers, 8) Large pliers, 9) Fine pliers, 10) Wire cutters and strippers
